Weekend in Charleston

Ashley, Joel and I went to Charleston last weekend. We stayed in the historic downtown area and toured the parks and historic district on Saturday. It was so very HOT this weekend, which is very unusual for mid-September. We ate at a cool resteraunt for lunch and had paninnis and sweet potato fries. Sunday we visited the aircraft carrier Yorktown which is decommissioned and docked in Charleston Harbor. We drove across the new suspension bridge over the Cooper River which just openend this summer. Also docked with the carrier was a submarine. It was increadibly cramped inside and I can't imagine having a whole crew of people living on it. After lunch, we took a ferry out to Fort Sumter and toured it. It is basically built on a sand bar that was built up into an island. Most of the brick work on it is still original pre-civil war vintage and there are even mortar shells still stuck in the walls from the bombardment. All three of us are history nuts/nerds so it was something we all enjoyed. All in all a good trip and nice way to get out of town.
