I went to Greensboro for work today for a press pull on one of my projects. I've never seen a press before and it was a really interesting trip. The machine itself wouldn't fit in my apartment and it smells like ink and it's very loud. It's all digitally run and the ink is adjusted from a console at the end of the press. It's also super fast. The two thousand sheets, the first side, of our job came out in half an hour. We approved the color and started our tour of the plant. By the time the tour was over, our job was off the press. It had to dry, since we were using an uncoated paper, before it could be run through the other side so the other side wasn't going to be printed until this evening. But all together, it wouldn't take more than two hours to print the whole job. All the time involved is in the prepress and setup and assembly of the piece.
The final piece should be back in about two weeks and I can't wait to see it.
a record of and tales from my unextrordinary exploits
